Monash University Research Data Archive (MURDA)
The Monash University Research Data Archive (MURDA) is a managed archive service and research data repository supported by Monash eResearch. The Archive is designed to support the long-term storage and retention of data produced by research projects and help to ensure compliance with any data sharing agreements, ethics agreements or other encumbrances. The MURDA stores static collections of research data that will not be actively used but need to be retained for a specific period of time. Once a collection has reached the end of its nominated retention period, it is reviewed in consultation with the Data Owner. The minimum retention period for collections is determined by the project requirements as well as the Monash Retention and Disposal Authority (RDA).
The MURDA is comprised of seven core functions:
- Identification: Assessment of a collection and confirmation that long-term retention in the Archive is appropriate.
- Analysis: Assessment and documentation of a collection and its content.
- Ingestion: Compression of collection data and its ingestion into the Archive.
- Sentencing: Formal collection review in order to determine the minimum retention period.
- Preservation: Assessment of a collection that must be retained for 10+ years. Includes consideration of future accessibility and related technical requirements.
- Access: Formal process for providing access to collections upon request by authorised individuals.
- Deletion: Formal process for reviewing collections at the end of their retention period. May result in disposal (deletion) or further retention.
Note that there is no direct user access to the Archive, but copies of ingested collections can be provided to the Data Owner or other authorised individuals upon request. For further information on the MURDA please contact Monash eResearch.
