🗓️ July 2 & July 3 - Introduction to Unix Shell and Command Line Interface

Monash eResearch is pleased to announce our upcoming Introduction to the Unix Shell workshop. This workshop to be held on CLAYTON CAMPUS, spread across 2 half days, on Thursday 2nd July and Friday, 3rd July from 9:00am -1:00pm AEST.

  • Date: This workshop will be held across two half days, on Thursday 2nd July and Friday 3rd July
  • Time: 9.00am - 1.00pm (AEST) each day
  • Venue: Room G05, Alan Finkel Building for Technology and Design (Bldg 94), 20 Exhibition Walk, Clayton VIC 3168

The Unix shell is a powerful tool that allows you to perform complex tasks with just a few keystrokes. More importantly, it helps you combine existing programs in new ways and automate repetitive tasks so you aren’t typing the same things over and over again.

Using the shell is fundamental to accessing a wide range of powerful tools and computing resources, including High-Performance Computing (HPC) supercomputers. This workshop will start you on the path toward using these resources effectively by guiding you through the basics of the shell and file systems.

What will be covered:

  • Navigating and working with files and directories
  • Pipes and filters
  • Loops
  • Shell scripts
  • How to use AI with Bash

What you'll need:

Bring your own laptop and charger. Setup instructions on how to install the SSH tool needed to log into our Unix server will be emailed to all registrants 2 days before the workshop.

Eligibility

This course is open to all Monash staff and all HDR students. To register, you must use your Monash email address.

🗓️ July 10 - Introduction To HPC

Monash eResearch is pleased to announce our upcoming Introduction to High-performance Computing (HPC) workshop!

  • Date: Friday 10th July
  • Time: 9.00am - 3.00pm (AEST)
  • Venue: Room G05, Alan Finkel Building for Technology and Design (Bldg 94), 20 Exhibition Walk, Clayton Campus

High-Performance Computing

This workshop provides an overview of how High-Performance Computing systems works. You will get hands-on experience with a small cluster and learn how to use Linux command-line tools to write and submit Slurm scripts as simple batch jobs. What you learn here can be applied to much larger systems later.

What will be covered?

  • What a computer cluster is and why we use it
  • How to access a cluster and follow best practices.
  • How to submit a job script.
  • How to use software modules in your job script.
  • How to use the cluster resources effectively

Tools taught: Slurm (job scheduler) commands

Prerequisites:

This workshop is aimed at beginners. However, prior command-line experience is mandatory .

What you'll need:
