Introduction To Unix and the Command Line Interface

Join Monash eResearch for an introductory course on the Unix Shell and Command-Line Interface.

This course is delivered over two half-day sessions and covers navigating and working with files and directories, pipes and filters, loops, shell scripts and how to find files. It will start you on a path towards using these resources effectively and guide you through the basics of file systems and the Unix Shell.

The Intro to Unix Shell course also serves as a useful prerequisite for our Introduction to High-performance Computing course, which will be delivered on 17 April 2026.

Eligibility

This course is open to all Monash staff and all HDR students. To register, you must use your Monash email address.

This is an in-person training! You are required to attend both sessions. Please bring your own laptop and charger. Registrants will be emailed instructions on how to install the SSH tool that will be needed to log in to our Unix server 2 days before the workshop.

Join Monash eResearch for an introductory course on High-Performance Computing.

This workshop will provide an overview of what a High-Performance Computing system looks like. Users will get hands-on experience with a small cluster, and learn how to use Linux command-line tools to write Slurm scripts which they can submit as simple batch jobs. After the workshop, users will be able to use what they learn on much bigger systems.

The environment and tools that will be taught and used in the workshop include:

  • What's a computer cluster and the purpose of using it?
