GroupAdmin access group control
The University GroupAdmin is used to provide ownership and access control to market and vault storage allocations in similar fashion to the access control for the University S: drive. See How to manage group mailing lists for that systems documentation.
Each group contains two lists of accounts; a list of "owners" and a list of "members".
The "owners" are staff who can manage this group through the GroupAdmin system, the initial owner will be the staff member who applies for the storage allocation.
The "members" are account holders who can access the storage that this group applies to.
eg, some file storage provided for an engineering project "Cat Videos", that is accessible at the network location \\storage.erc.monash.edu.au\shares\cat-videos
will have an access group of RDS-ENG-cat-videos.
Group Renewal
RDS storage allocations are granted for the requested lifespan of their project, subject to periodic review, however the groupadmin groups are independent of this and renewal notices for them can cause confusion and occasional concern.
The groupadmin system grants groups a finite, but extendable, lifespan. Initially this is set to one year from creation, but can be extended at any time up to three years from the current date. When groups are one month from their expiry date a reminder email is automatically sent to all of the group's owners and the MeRC RDS group. In the majority of cases MeRC staff will automatically renew these groups, however the owners are also free to renew these at any time themselves.
